OctoCue Receiver app: installation & usage

Installation

The receiver app is a self-installing executable that runs on Windows 10. To install it, open "OctoCue receiver-x.x.x Setup.exe".

The application will install and run. During this process, you may be asked by Windows Firewall if you're happy to allow OctoCue receiver to communicate over public and private networks.

This is expected behaviour and you'll need to allow communication over private networks (as a minimum) to allow the receiver app to work.

Removal

Uninstall the app using the standard 'Add or remove programs' tool in Windows 10.

Warning: macOS support is currently in beta testing. Use at own risk!

Download the ZIP file and extact OctoCue.app from the zip folder.

To run the app, double clikc on OctoCue.app - you may want to copy this to your Application folder for convenience.

App permissions

On first run (and first click), the macOS will prompt you to grant permissions to OctoCue Receiver.

In total, OctoCue Receiver requires Accessibility permission and Automation permissions - see below for samples. To check this, open System Preferences, Security & Privacy.

Once all the correct permissions have been granted, close and re-open OctoCue Receiver before running a show.

You can test macOS key presses using our key press logger utility.

Usage

On startup, you'll be asked for your show code - this is how the receiver app selects the correct show to listen to.

You can find your show code in the footer of the show control page. Show codes are not case sensitive.

Once you've connected to a show, you can close the interface. The app will continue to run in the background, and can be re-opened by right-clicking on the OctoCue Receiver tray icon.

To close the app completely, right click on the tray icon and select Quit.

Advanced configuration

For advanced configruation, incuding key remapping and OSC control options, see our OctoCue Receiver: Advanced Config page.

Utilities

You can view the key presses that OctoCue Receiver generates using our key press logger utility.

Optional: Powerpoint add-in

The Powerpoint add-in is a small utility that extracts slide data and slide notes and sends this information to the listener app in real time.

OctoCue can operate without the Powerpoint add-in running, but no live slide data or notes will be displayed to the presenters.

Update 12/6/20: Depending on your systems settings, installing this plugin may trigger Windows Defender SmartScreen warnings.

This is because Microsoft have not seen enough installations of this plugin to profile it properly, not because it's malicious. We're currently working with Microsoft to rectify this issue.

For more details, see the installation instructions below.

Installation instructions

PowerPoint add-in: installation

Installation

  • Download the .zip file and save it to your computer
  • Unpack the .zip file to a temporary folder
  • Run setup.exe from the temporary folder
  • Once installation is complete, delete your temporary folder.

This COM add-in for PowerPoint requires some supporting frameworks, including:

  • Microsoft .NET 4.7.1 (66MB)
  • Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 Tools for Office Runtime (38MB)

Your computer will automatically download and install these items direct from Microsoft, if required.

Finally, if PowerPoint is currently running on your machine, you'll neeed to close and re-open it to load up the add-in.

Windows Defender SmartScreen

Depending on your system settings, installing this plugin may trigger Microsoft Defender SmartScreen warnings.

This is because Microsoft have not seen enough installations of this plugin to profile it properly, not because it's malicious.

Follow the 'More info' link to allow the add-in to install.

If you're still having issues, please let us know.

Check the Add-in is running

The OctoCue PowerPoint Add-in has no control interface - it runs completely in the background. To check if the add-in is running correctly, open the listener app and check the 'PPT add-in' field.

This will show 'Not detected' or 'Running' depending on the add-in state.

Note that the add-in will only run when PowerPoint is open on your machine.

You can view a list of active add-ins by opening PowerPoint and browsing to 'File' > 'Options' > 'Add-ins'. Here you can also enable and disable the add-in using the 'Manage COM Add-ins' option.

Removal

To uninstall the add-in, use the standard 'Add or remove programs' tool in Windows 10.
